FTA - "Networking vendors have stepped up lobbying efforts around the proposed National Broadband Network to get a slice of what could be up to $25 billion.
Juniper Networks claims to have been `fairly vocal' in its efforts, and has made a submission on what it believes to be an `optimal architecture'.
This would be designed with IPv6 in mind from day one, according to Shaun Page, vice president A/NZ for Juniper.
"We're making ourselves heard," Page told iTNews.
"NBN is going to be a good thing for all equipment vendors. We watch with intent as [the debate] plays out."
Juniper Networks already claims to have 90 percent of Australia's broadband remote access market routing through Unisphere equipment."

Apple doing more IPv6 stuff, helping to push us all in the right direction ... FTA - "The advantages of IPv6 are both obvious and largely invisible. Most users won't even notice the move to IPv6, as DNS handles the IP addressing details in the background. The paradox is that while the Internet desperately needs IPv6, few see any reason to rush toward it. There's no obvious killer application of IPv6 to offset the considerable expense of upgrading all of the critical routers and other equipment that makes up the Internet.
Routers typically run BSD or Linux; Microsoft's software dominance on the desktop isn't even relevant in the world of routers. However, Apple's AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule devices are in widespread use among consumers. Earlier this year, NPD reported that Apple now has greater than ten percent market share among retail sales of WiFi N routers.
Apple's WiFi N routers support acting as an IPv6 node or tunneling through the IPv4 Internet to access IPv6 services (below). They also include an IPv6 firewall supporting incoming IPSec authentication and Teredo tunnels (used to get through NAT on the other end). Apple's nearly silent support for IPv6 is interesting in itself, but what's more interesting is that Apple also has two killer apps in hand for promoting IPv6, the market power to engage uptake, and a strong business model for benefitting from IPv6 adoption."

This is the problem (FTA) - "It is now clear the original optimistic IPv6 deployment plans have failed...Based on our analysis, at the current rate of adoption, we are a decade or more away from pervasive adoption of dual stack support for IPv6." ... also, a sidenote, remember - lies, damned lies and statistics - take this with a grain of salt ...

FTA - "What may turn out to be the world's largest IPv6 network is going to be using Juniper Networks's routing platform to handle the next generation of Internet traffic.
Juniper has announced that the China Next Generation Internet (CNGI) IPv6 project will be powered by Juniper's M- and T-series routing platforms. Financial terms of the deal were not publicly disclosed.
China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) launched the CNGI initiative in 2003 with the goal of creating a countrywide IPv6 backbone. CNGI is projected to include 39 GigaPOP network points of presence covering 20 cities across China. "

FTA - "On the contrary: The explosion of knowledge represented by the Internet and abetted by all sorts of digital technologies makes us more productive and gives us the opportunity to become smarter, not dumber. Think of Wikipedia and its emergent spinoffs, like Wiktionary. Imperfect as they may be, the collective brainpower contained within these kinds of sites -- and the hunger for learning and accurate information they represent -- is something human history has never known before. (Even Encyclopedia Britannica will soon be accepting user contributions.) Or consider the Public Library of Science: By breaking the publishing industry's choke hold on the circulation of scientific information, this powerful online resource arms scientists and the masses alike with the same data, accelerating new discoveries and breakthroughs. Not exactly the kind of effect one would expect from a technology that's threatening to turn us into philistines."

FTA - "In preparation for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) ministerial meeting titled "The Future of the Internet Economy" in Seoul next month, the OECD released a report analyzing the rapid depletion of IPv4 addresses. The report cites the commonly held wisdom that addresses for the currently used version of the Internet Protocol (IP) will run out at some time in 2011. With that in mind, the authors recognize that, if we have to choose among wider use of NAT, allowing for address trading, and adopting IPv6, the latter is the only option that works in the long run. "

FTA - "A little over a year ago, I wrote an article about the IPv4 address consumption with the subtitle IPv4 Address Space: 2.46 Billion Down, 1.25 Billion to Go. A week ago, we reached the magic number of 2.7 billion IPv4 addresses used. With 3.7 billion possible addresses,¹ this means we now have less than a billion unused IPv4 addresses left. There are 39 blocks of 16.78 million addresses in the IANA global pool and another 339 million addresses that have been given out by IANA to the five Regional Internet Registries, but not yet delegated to ISPs or end-users. Obama is sure he will win, and jsut thinks you are slow for not voting for him ... FTA - ""So I understand why a lot of folks are saying, this should just happen. Why are we having to run all these television commercials? Why do we have to raise all this money? Just read the papers. These are the knuckleheads who have been in charge. Throw `em out. But American politics aren't that simple," he said."
