FTA - "The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has just approved the relaxation of the rules for the introduction of new Top-Level Domains--a move that could drastically change the Internet. The new decision--some calling it of historic importance and others predictable--will allow companies to register their brands as generic top-level domain names (TLDs). For instance, Microsoft could apply to have a TLD such as '.msn' and Apple apply for '.mac'. "

FTA - "Before joining ICANN, I thought that ICANN was the only part of the Internet that wasn't really working. I knew that there must be a better way to do what ICANN does, but I couldn't be bothered to figure it out. I'd agree with people who said things like, "it should just be distributed" or "it should just be first come first serve" or "we should just get rid of it." People from ICANN would say, "it's more complicated than that" or "at this point that would be impossible."
After being part of the process for three years, I find myself saying those same things and feeling a sense of exasperation at the people who take pot shots at ICANN from the peanut gallery without really trying to help or change things. I also have gained a huge respect for most of the people who participate in ICANN, many as volunteers, trying to improve the process and keep the Internet running.
With all of it's tumultuous history and bumps and warts, ICANN, in my opinion, is the best way that we can manage names and numbers on the Internet and any new thing to try to do what it does would be less fair and probably wouldn't work. "

FTA - ""IPv6 will be an essential part [of] our future, and support in the root servers is essential to the growth, stability and reliability of the public Internet," said the chair of ICANN's Internet service and connectivity provider constituency, Tony Holmes. "The ISP community welcomes this development as part of the continuing evolution of the public Internet."
...
David Conrad, ICANN's vice president of research, said the addition of IPv6 addresses for the root servers "enhances the end-to-end connectivity for IPv6 networks, and furthers the growth of the global interoperable Internet".
Nominet is the not-for-profit company that runs the .uk registry. Speaking to ZDNet.com.au sister site ZDNet.co.uk on Tuesday, Nominet's director of IT, Jay Daley, said the onus was now on those running large Web sites to make the transition to IPv6. "

IPv6 in the root, posted (by me) at CommandInformation ... "As of 02/04/08 (cute, eh?) ICANN/IANA will be adding AAAA ("Quad A") records for 4 of the Root Servers.
Why is this news-worthy, you ask?
First off - any change to the DNS root zone is news.
Secondly - this means that, for the first time, it is feasible to resolve some other node's name to an address (that is what DNS is for, after all) WITHOUT USING ANY IPv4. Until this change occurs, there was at least a tiny little bit of IPv4 involved, and without that IPv4 piece this wouldn't so much work."

FTA - "For Paul Vixie, president of the Internet Systems Consortium and an operator of the F root DNS server and creator of the popular BIND DNS software, the ICANN/IANA move to IPv6 is a very good thing.
"This is one of the roadblocks to running an Internet device IPv6-only, and we're very glad to finally see this roadblock removed," Vixie told InternetNews.com.
Vixie isn't the only one that is enthusiastic about the ICANN/IANA announcement of AAAA for IPv6 on some root DNS servers. Internet service provider Verio is also keen on the move. "

FTA - "Just before year's end, ICANN/IANA sent out a short message saying that "on 4 February 2008, IANA will add AAAA records for the IPv6 addresses of the four root servers whose operators have requested it." The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is mostly responsible for the global Domain Name System, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is the part of ICANN. That means that as of February 4, 2008, it will (theoretically) be possible for two IPv6 hosts to communicate across the IPv6 Internet without having to rely on any IPv4 infrastructure. It's been a long journey to get to this point."
